How to Borrow Design Ideas from a Website without Downright Copying It

I was strolling through the Minneapolis Institute of Art, completely unburdened by time or a schedule. I saw Georgia O’Keeffe and an uncharacteristically-Picasso Picasso that transported me back to a university Art History class. If I had even an ounce of artistic ability, my hands would have been twitching to create something of my own. Every sculpture or oil-on-canvas that caught my attention would have inspired my own final product—but how could I mimic designs without downright stealing?
